AGM coming up on the 24th February which is when I will hand over the Captains role to Darrell Thomas.

I have enjoyed my year and would like to thank my fellow committee members for their support and commitment in ensuring another successful year for club.

It is encouraging that the course is now used regularly for county competitions and this will continue next year. Much of this is due to the greens staff past and continuing efforts so a big thanks to them in making Stony Holme a course people play and compliment.

Willie Nicholl deserves a special mention for looking after the clubs financial affairs for many a year. You will be missed when you leave the committee after the AGM. Thanks Willie you will be a hard act to follow.

The shop and club house staff are also to be thanked for their friendly service.

Finally thanks to all members who supported our competitions and will do so this coming year of which the start is only a few weeks away. For info entry sheets will be posted shortly.

Play well and prosper

What is the ruling if the ball gets pinned between the flag stick and the cup?

You're playing a shot from off the green. Your ball rolls right at the cup. You just know it's going in. Then it hits the flag stick and ... just hangs there. Stuck. Pinned between the flag stick and the cup. Neither in nor out.

What's the ruling?

It's found in Rule 17-4. Carefully remove the flag stick. If you've been living right, the ball will drop into the cup and your previous shot is considered holed.

But if you've been a bad boy or girl and, somehow, some way, the ball fails to drop into the cup, you must place the ball on the lip of the cup and putt out.

(The answer to this question only applies to shots from off the green because it's a penalty to leave the flag stick in on shots from on the putting surface.)

Following on from our success in gaining golf mark there are free lessons up for grabs at swifts on a Saturday at PM with Steven Ling our PGA Professional.  2 Weeks have already gone and there are only 8 left, so if your are a junior or know a junior who could benefit from some free lessons then bring them down.  The new season will soon be upon us and we are always looking to strengthen and expand our team, so if you fancy playing on a golf team then keep and eye out on the website and the notice board at the club for when trials are.

                                                                            Thanks
                                                                                       Darrell Thomas

Eskdale Golf Course

18 holes of challenging golf set in the majestic Eskdale Valley await visitors to this secluded parkland course.

Stunning views attract golfers each year and combined with a layout that will test the most skilful player, Eskdale will provide a great game.

A quiet , relaxed feel is guaranteed in these surroundings and talk of the course will carry on long after the eighteenth hole is finished.

Combined with its own private salmon fishing river and great self catering accommodation the Eskdale Golf course really is worth the visit

18 Hole Par 69 parkland course that reaches 5,494 yards in length.

Henry Cotton three times Open Champion in the 1940's, helped in its development and held it in great affection.

Stunning views attract golfers each year and combined with a layout that will test the most skillful player, Eskdale will provide a great game.

The signature hole is undoubtedly the 151 yard 14th. An elevated tee looks towards a green set within a vast trout pond which requires an accurate shot to stay out of trouble. Eskdale prides itself on a quiet and relaxed feel.

This Months Golf Lesson - Stopping Fat Shots

Latest Golf News

The correlation between thinking well and making successful shots is not 100%.  But, the correlation between thinking badly and unsuccessful shots is much higher. - Dr Bob Rotella

My ball is all scuffed up.

If a lot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they'd starve to death.  ~Sam Snead

Greetings to you all. A new year and a new season to look forward to. This year our newsletter will come out in 4 issues; winter, spring, summer and autumn.  I am hoping the weather is a little better this year in order to get a few more competitions in and indeed a few more rounds on top of that.   Even at this early stage the course is looking quite good.  I noticed when playing the other day there was a bit more grass than usual and work has begun on the greens that were so good last year.  Happy playing everybody and good luck for the season.

When Stony Holme Can’t Be played

Two Mexican detectives were investigating the murder of Juan Gonzalez.

' How was he killed?' asked one detective.

' With a golf gun,' the other detective replied.

' A golf gun?  What's a golf gun?'

' I don't know, but it sure made a hole in Juan.'

New Golf Gear for 2012

FOUR NEW GOLF BALL MODELS LAUNCHED BY TITLEIST

Titleist have launched four new models of golf ball for the 2012 season, each designed to suit different skills levels and personal preferences.

In addition to a new NXT Tour ball and NXT Tour S model, Titleist have also unveiled the Velocity ball and the DT SoLo.

The NXT Tour first launched in 2001, but there have been many improvements since. The latest incarnation has been engineered for longer distance, but with no sacrifice in terms of short game spin and control.

The S version offers golfers a slighly softer feel, but still offers outstanding distance off the tee and with the long irons. Both models are priced at £34 per dozen.

The Velocity ball is, as the name suggests, all about speed and distance. The new high-speed core and cover combination helps to deliver high initial ball speed on full swing shots with all clubs and will retail at £28 per dozen.

Finally, Titleist's DT SoLo (£21 per dozen) has also got a makeover - it still features all the yardage its predecessors delivered, but with a softer cover for greater feel around the green.
